Week 2 (02/09 - 06/09)
Print Making
Creating Patterns
Description
Pictures that I took around the school for the exercise!
I tried to take pictures of objects with interesting patterns.
Result:
Reflection
I created patterns on a graph paper, afer observing patterns in school. This process was particularly difficult for me as I had problems coming up with interesting patterns, once again due to my stiff ways. I could not think outside of the graph and grids and mainly worked only with geometric shapes. Afterwards, I used a pencil to trace over my work on a tracing paper, then imprinted it onto the lino blocks.
Next, I experimented with linocutting, this being my first time. I had to be careful during this process because I cut out the shape of the block before I carved it. During the carving, I accidentally hurt myself twice, as I was cutting towards my fingers. Being my first time handling linocut, here is what I learned:
- Hold the linocutter at an angle, let it slide across the lino block.
- Adjust the size of the cutter accordingly, do not just stick with one size.
- Do not cut out the shape of the lino block before carving onto it.
- Make sure to carve deep enough, or else the patterns would not show
- Use thinner ink, but not too thin. Dilute acrylic paint with a little bit of water or use lino ink.
- Get a roller to get the ink across the blocks evenly, also spread the ink out evenly on a flat surface.
Activity: Create patterns using linocut
Theme
Aquatic life, animals, and marine life.
Reflection
I decided to carve out subjects that I was interested in, being marine life. For this activity, I drew and planned to carve out multiple illustrations - jellyfish, seahorse, orca, coral. However, due to poor time management, I was only able to carve out one jellyfish and the coral. I tried to make my prints more interesting by using a multitude of colours over the canvas before printing it on. In an attempt to beautify my final piece, I splattered diluted blue paint over my paper, drawing link to my theme of marine life. I also stamped my coral prints over the page, also referencing the marine theme.
I actually liked the illustrations and the prints that I managed to create, even though they were incomplete. I also learned to work on a bigger scale, carving pictures on the lino block using larger cutter heads. Therefore, I decided to carve more of the patterns that I made, in my own time.
Overall, I was very disappointed in myself during this class due to my oversight. I was overly ambitious and planned too many things to do, before taking into account the time. My final piece looked very disjointed, with some prints and some pasted tracing paper illustrations. After this session, I promised to pay more attention to time management during lessons.
